April 2021 Meeting Minutes

APRIL 2021 MINUTES

We had our April meeting in person at Hopkins Farm Brewery who graciously hosted us for the third time. 3/4 of the board were stuck in Florida so Ken was on his own! Thank you Ken for managing the meeting alone!

OLD BUSINESS: 1) Our February meeting was to support MD breweries and it was quite successful as we purchased a lot of beers (84 unique beers, 122 all together). We will have a unique raffle in June for those that participated and the prizes will be donated by local breweries. Our March meeting was on Scotch/Scottish Ales via a bottle share that was opened to other styles as well. We had more homebrews that we could drink in one night!

2) We’ve had 2 Tech Corners since last month, both on whether certain “essential” brewing practices are actually essential.

3) LABS met at Linda and Adi’s on March 27th for a Triple Karmeliet meeting. Some of us tried to brew the traditional recipe, some the modern one. We all had a good time and drank like monks.

4) Next years’s March style was voted to be Belgian Dark Strong. The other choices were West Coast IPA, Pilsner, IPL.

5) Marc offered to have water tests. Reach out to him for details.

NEW BUSINESS: 1) Big Brew is Saturday May 1st! The club is sponsoring those brewing Janet’s Brown recipe by providing hops. This hoppy brown ale will become the style for June.

2) Next Tech Corner is on 4/22/21 at 8PM. Please submit ideas for topics on Slack.

3) Next month’s May meeting will be in-person at the Barn. Social will start at 6:30PM and the actual meeting at 7:30PM. The Barn will have a food truck (Jimmy's Seafood Food Truck) until 7PM there, so parking may be more difficult, but we’ll have a dinner option :) The style is Mexican Lager!

4) There is a new brewery opening in Havre De Grace: Battery Island. They are Veteran Owned and they hoped to open on the 16th but now think it’ll be May 1st.

5) LABS next style will be Weissenbock with its many forms and will be hosted by Marc this summer. Some of us have already brewed but it’s never too late to start. Remember, for LABS, you need to bring your own brew and the Lambic project is still going.

6) Gregg has an Appalachian trail project for hiking and sharing brews. Reach out to him on Slack for details.

7) Chris mentioned that the DE store How Do You Brew is willing to discount usually non-discounted equipment.

FINANCIAL REPORT: we have $1,283 and 26 paying members.

BEERS: This was an open month. Ken brought his Tennessee Common. Kelly brought a Sahti (an original LABS project) and his Chocolate/Vanilla Porter. Matt brought a Dark Mild, Andy brought an American Pale Ale and an English Brown; Dave brought a Raison Clone; Colin brought a Plum Golden; Gregg brought his Czech Pilsner; Chris brought his Flanders Brown and a Dunkleweissen.

Happy Brewing! Cheers!
