This meeting was once again in the parking lot of Double Groove as the Barn is still closed.
OLD BUSINESS:
1) our last meeting we had 23 different homebrews, around 13 of them being Kettle Sours.
2) Tech Corner is on Thursdays at 7PM. See below for a special Tech Corner on 10/15!
3) Ken is hosting LABS for a fall meeting on Sahti on October 24th.
4) The Reward Program for Homebrewing is updated, check it out here.
NEW BUSINESS:
1) We are proposing changes to the Bylaws to bring the wording in line with our current times. Please check the document on Slack and become familiar with the changes (they are highlighted). If anyone has questions, contact your Board. We will vote on these changes at the October meeting! The October meeting is also when nominations for the Board will occur. This meeting may be at Hopkins Farm Brewery on a Monday night.
2) We voted for the Christmas Beer! We had choices of Spiced Brown, Blond Stout, Belgian Dubbel and Spiced Saison. The Spiced Saison, Gregg’s suggestion, won. We also decided to brew only half a batch and bottle it all. This is because we are likely not to have a traditional Christmas Party.
3) October’s Beer is a Fruit/Vegetable beer.
4) We had a vote for next year’s September style: Oktoberfest/Marzen/Festbier won.
5) Linda has started a Beer Judging Study Group for those who want to improve their sensory analysis, judging skills and communication about beer. They meet 1/month for about 2 hours and judge 3-5 beers using BJCP forms and discussions similar to a judging panel. Their next meeting is Friday 9/18; reach out to Linda on Slack or email if interested in attending. They hope to eventually offer the Club the possibility of anonymous beer submissions for impartial judging.
6) Imperial Yeast reached out to us via Adi and will be joining us at the October 15th Tech Corner. We hope to have a good showing for an informative discussion, so please mark your calendars.
7) Chris is facilitating a bulk sale from How Do You Brew for 15% off in September. They have Proximity Malt available. Check out The “For Sale” channel on Slack for details and to sign up.
FINANCIAL REPORT: we have $1,104 and 26 paying members.
BEERS: our style of the month was Kveik Beers!
Ken: brought a Sahti and a Spiced Pumpkin beer, both brewed with Kveik yeast. He also brought 2 Farmhouse ales that spontaneously fermented from a Pale Ale recipe.
Adi and Linda: brought a NEIPA brewed with Kveik and fermented at 95F. This recipe was duplicated by Marc and Mike and they fermented at 75F. Brogle-95 and Brogle-75 were hopped exclusively with Sabro.
Gregg: brought an Old Ale with Brett. This was a lesson in yeast stress as it had a medicinal, Band-Aid flavor that Gregg could only attribute to this reason. He won’t be able to mask it.
Art and Claire: brought a Double IPA fermented with Kveik at 90F but that still stalled and struggled to reach FG.
Kelly: brought a Rye Pale Ale fermented with Kveik and using Enigma hops.
Dave H: brought a Cream Ale with Kveik and a Smoked Maibok.
Matt: brought a West Coast IPA and a “Troubled Beer” that he wanted the Club to diagnose as fermentation had a difficult start and he has pronounced off-flavors in it.
Chris: brought two beers with Kveik: an Oktoberfest and a Double IPA that used fresh hops from his own garden!
Ryan: brought a Sour Belgian Triple.
Steve J: brought a Peach Blonde.
We’d like to thank Double Groove for allowing us to meet and share homebrew in their parking lot once again. Hope to see you all in October! Happy Brewing and stay safe! Cheers!
